2019 Charity Announcement

Friday, December 7, 2018

Having received a lot of applications, our team voted down to a shortlist and after a final vote, we are delighted to announce our support of jamiearnold.org fundraising for St Rocco's Hospice

A lot of our team are parents (and grandparents) and we felt that Jamie's story was one that resonated with us. Cancer is a horrible thing and no parent wants to outlive their children.

Jamie was a popular and talented young man who could have gone on to do great things, sadly it was not to be.

Lynch Syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic condition that has a high risk of colon cancer as well as other cancers including endometrial cancer (second most common), ovary, stomach, small intestine, hepatobiliary tract, upper urinary tract, brain, and skin. The increased risk for these cancers is due to inherited mutations that impair DNA mismatch repair. It is a type of cancer syndrome.

Lynch syndrome is a condition that can run in families. LS is also known as hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). It is caused by an alteration in a gene called a mismatch repair gene.

LS doesn’t cause any symptoms. But people with LS have an increased risk of developing bowel cancer, womb cancer and some other cancers. If your family has a history of developing these cancers when they are under 50 years old, it is possible they have the altered gene that causes LS.

If you are worried about your family history, talk to your GP. They may refer you for genetic testing or recommend you have regular screening for some cancers. If you have LS, it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of bowel and womb cancer. If you develop any symptoms, you will need to get them checked by a doctor.

The money donated will go to St Rocco's Hospice where Jamie spent his last few months.

Hospices across the country do amazing work with less than a third of their operating costs provided by the NHS, they rely heavily on donations and fundraising to survive.

We have supported hospices before such as Pendleside and Derian House and we probably will again as they are a service we could not do without.

St Rocco's Hospice provide quality care and promote social, psychological and spiritual wellbeing for patients with life limiting illness, and in doing so place patients, carers and families at the heart of everything that they do.

Our team will be doing everything they can to help raise money and awareness so we can really make a difference to people's lives.
